New ŠKODA Museum opening soon

10/26/2012
Refurbishment works for brand’s new showcase in final stage. Festive reopening scheduled for November 26th, 2012. Innovative concept shows 117-year company history in all-new dimensions.
Completion of the new ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav is entering its finishing lap. After nine months of total refurbishment, the “brand’s showcase” will see its festive reopening on November 26th, 2012. The ŠKODA Museum on Václava Klementa in Mladá Boleslav, site of ŠKODA’s original manufacturing hall, will permit interactive immersion into ŠKODA history.

From late November, visitors to the new ŠKODA Museum will be able to experience the brand’s history and related stories in a new and fascinating way. More than 1,800 sqm of exhibit space on Václava Klementa in Mladá Boleslav, in direct proximity to the brand’s main plant, will display highlights from 117 years of company history and important milestones of car manufacturing.

“ŠKODA is one of the oldest and most tradition-rich automobile brands in the world. The new ŠKODA Museum is a widely visible symbol of the importance of the ŠKODA brand, and it is sure to delight its visitors,” says ŠKODA’s chairman of the board, Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “We are proud of our history. In the years ahead, ŠKODA is set to grow worldwide. When you are overtaking others, you need to look into your rear-view mirror regularly. This is what we are doing with the new museum in its historical location, and we are doing it in a fascinating way,” says ŠKODA’s boss.

The ŠKODA Museum is housed in one of the company’s original factory buildings. This currently makes ŠKODA the only automobile manufacturer to present its history in such a broad sweep in historic production halls. “This is down to earth and simply clever, in other words, it is typical of ŠKODA,” Vahland explains. “What we are doing is holding a modern presentation in one of the company’s authentic building complexes.”

The structure will be newly resplendent both inside and out from late November. It will be bright and modern, transparent, open and inviting. In redesigning the museum, Jangled Nerves architects from Stuttgart included historic building sections into the display. “Where it was necessary, we created something new, and we did so in a resolute and precise way. The mixture of a historic and cutting-edge interior decoration is what makes the new museum so exciting and unique,” says Thomas Hundt, creative director at Jangled Nerves. Under the refurbishment, the building’s core was almost totally removed. The entire technical infrastructure such as electrical systems, lighting and air-conditioning is all new. In the weeks leading up to the reopening, workers will conclude interior decoration and finish the exterior. Also, all of the exhibits will be brought into the museum.

The revised collection will now consist of three thematic areas: “tradition,” “evolution” and “production” enabling visitors to immerse themselves into the brand’s history and the fascination of vintage cars. Besides static presentations, the exhibition concept uses many instances of interactive elements and audio-visual media in order to achieve a truly emotional presentation.

In addition, the new “Laurin & Klement hall” now offers a 930 sqm modern multifunction venue for events and special exhibitions at the museum. This space opens toward the “tradition” and “production” sections of the museum, enabling an especially flexible use. The museum’s lobby is also a multifunctional design offering space for smaller receptions. There, visitors are greeted by the first exhibit as an eye catcher. A museum shop and the modern VÁCLAV café-restaurant round off the new ŠKODA Museum.
